YOU JUST ALLOWED YOUR CITY'S SYSTEM TO GET HIJACKED

On June 10th, Lake City's phone and email systems were hijacked by a hacker demanding $490,000 in ransom to give access back to the city.  The hacker used Ransomware, a malware program that hacks systems, files and telephones - making them inoperable.  The hacker will demand payment before providing a key that will "release" the systems, file and telephones from the attack.

So far in 2019, more than 20 cities have received a ransomware attack.  Riviera Beach recently agreed to pay $600,000 for a ransomware attack and these types of attacks are becoming more frequent with local governments.  Stopping these types of attacks is very difficult since it requires a click or download from just one employee to open the doors to the ransomware.

The email you received and the fake login/password page are tools of the trade for hackers and it is important that government employees know what to look for, what to avoid and who to contact when they suspect something suspicious online.  You're here because you didn't know what to look for and that could lead to a mistake that costs the city hundreds of thousands of dollars.
