How RFID Skimming Actually Works
Many credit and debit cards contain an RFID chip that allows contactless "tap to pay" transactions. That same chip can, in theory, be read by a portable scanner from a short distance — typically a few inches, though claims of multi-foot range are generally exaggerated under real-world conditions.
A skimmer with the right equipment standing close enough, in a crowd or queue, could capture card data without ever touching your wallet.
What RFID Blocking Actually Does
An RFID-blocking card or sleeve works by creating a Faraday shield — a barrier that blocks the radio frequency signal from reaching your card, or your card's signal from reaching a reader. It's a passive, no-battery solution: it doesn't detect theft, it physically prevents the signal exchange that skimming requires.
Does It Work? The Honest Answer
Independent lab testing has confirmed that properly designed RFID-blocking materials do block the relevant frequency ranges used by contactless cards and passports. The technology itself isn't in question — it's well-understood physics.
What's debated is how common RFID skimming actually is in the wild compared to other forms of fraud, like card-not-present fraud or data breaches. RFID skimming is real but represents a small fraction of overall card fraud.
So Is It Worth It?
